Introduction

Googong is an award-winning lifestyle-friendly suburb just a 25-minute drive from the Canberra centre and only 10km south of Queanbeyan CBD.

Surrounded on one side by Googong Reservoir and the wildlife sanctuary of Googong Foreshore, this rapidly growing suburb is more than just a prime position for commuters — it is surrounded by fresh open spaces, fabulous parks, walking trails and recreational areas.

It is perhaps no surprise then that Googong is fast becoming the latest up-and-coming suburb to live in for those with young families, first home buyers and forever home buyers looking for house and land packages near the capital.

History

Located in the Monaro region of New South Wales, on traditional Ngarigo Aboriginal country, there are five Indigenous groups that have identified custodial connections to the traditional country. There is also a long history of European farming and settlement, with the township originally being named after one of the larger farming properties; however, the origin and meaning of the word Googong are not fully known.

There are several historically significant sites in the surrounding area, with the most famous perhaps being the London Bridge Arch — a natural limestone bridge structure formed by Burra Creek over thousands of years. There is also the old London Bridge Homestead from 1845 and the Googong Dam, which is the largest in the ACT region. This area is now called Googong Foreshores and is a protected site for wildlife and a great recreational area with boating, hikes and short walks, birdwatching and mountain biking.

Neighbourhood

Googong is a master-planned community, meaning it has been designed specifically for enhanced quality of life for its residents with ample open space, green spaces, neighbourhood centres, schools and community facilities and shopping locations. The heart of this is Googong Commons, which weaves its way through the centre of town and links together the town and the lush landscape of Googong Foreshore.

Almost 25% of the site is dedicated to the natural environment, ensuring residents will have plenty of space to call their own. There is also a deliberate design to the streetscapes, meaning it’s an area people will want to walk and cycle in — not just drive through — strengthening the sense of community.

Commuting

Of course, we all want to decrease our travel time to and from work and spend more time with friends and family. Googong is a quick 25-minute drive to Canberra central on new, purpose-built roads.

Schools

In Googong North, you will find The Anglican School, which is a co-educational, open-entry school catering for Early Learning through to Year 9, eventually taking students through to Year 12.

The government has a public primary school scheduled for completion by 2023. A public secondary school is also proposed in Googong Central to provide for the growing needs of the families within this close-knit community.

In the nearby Queanbeyan, there are several public primary and secondary schools and various private schools around the ACT that are just a short commute from Googong.

Convenience

Googong is a self-sustained community, with a selection of shops to ensure the community doesn’t need to travel for all their shopping needs. The full retail ecosystem of Googong will be complete in 2024. When complete, it will have five neighbourhoods, a town centre with ample amenities and four local shopping centres to serve the community.

There are also medical facilities, restaurants and dining options, parks and recreational facilities aplenty! During the planning and development phase of Googong, there was much emphasis placed on user-friendly roads and intersection upgrades, as well as a myriad of community facilities with a local community centre, library, indoor sports and swimming centre, sports fields, open spaces and walkable pathways to join the neighbourhood together.

There are multiple restaurants, cafes and coffee shops within Googong, with more popping up as the population grows! Club Googong is a local favourite, the meeting place of many since the suburb first opened in 2014.

Community and Culture

Googong locals fondly referred to as “Googonians”, have everything they could need right at their front door. An easy commute to the city but surrounded by lush landscapes and open spaces, this picture perfect lifestyle works for people of all ages.

The ancient Monga National Park is close by along with Googong Foreshore and Reservoir where outdoor enthusiasts can kayak, sail, mountain bike, enjoy hikes and many short walks (ranging from easy to moderate), birdwatching and even fishing.

Googong is managed as a mixed fishery, and is stocked with Rainbow Trout, Silver Perch, Murray Cod and Golden Perch. Add to this that locals have the ideal situation of being able to holiday in the snow or the beach in under two hours — what more could you ask for?

There is also a huge program of public events slated throughout the year — from fishing to kite and music festivals — there is sure to be something for everyone.

Environment

Given its location, nestled in a lush surrounding landscape, it’s only natural for Googong to be incredibly environmentally friendly. An integrated water recycling system recycles over half of the waste water, with further sustainable technology infrastructure planned for the future. All of this and more is why Googong was awarded the first 5-star Green Community rating from Green Building Council!
