Homes are subject to normal, everyday wear and tear. However, taking some preventative measures to regularly maintain your property can help prolong its life and boost its value.

If you’re a new homeowner, use the tips in this article to help preserve your property, and enjoy a comfortable living environment for many years to come.

Safeguard your new home against wear and tear

Just like your car, your home needs regular TLC to continue functioning properly. Keep your property in top shape with these maintenance tips and tricks.

Invest in deep cleaning

In addition to your daily and weekly cleaning schedule, it’s important to invest time (or money, if you prefer hiring professional cleaners) in deep cleaning your property.

For example, schedule the cleaning of external windows and window frames – you may not do this on a regular basis, especially if your property is multi-storey. Another key deep-cleaning activity is removing dirt and grime from your bathroom and kitchen. These areas are prone to water damage and mould. Staying on top of your deep cleaning will help prevent future damage.

Maintain your outdoor space

Mowing the lawn and pulling the weeds may already be a part of your cleaning routine. A little extra maintenance work will keep your outdoor space looking great for years to come. Your property may benefit from the following:

  • Oiling and staining of decks and other outdoor timber elements. Timber becomes dry over time, which not only looks less-than-perfect, but can also result in more serious damage in the long run.
  • Fertilising your lawn. Keep your grass green and healthy with a regular dose of quality lawn fertiliser.
  • Adding new plants when necessary. If one or more of your plants die, don’t just leave the area bare. This could attract weeds. Instead, add new, climate-suitable plants.

Eliminate pests as soon as possible

There’s no denying the potential harm that nasty insects and rodents can cause in your home. If you fail to remove pests as soon as possible, you may be faced with expensive, time-consuming structural or electrical repairs.

Always hire a professional pest eradicator to eliminate any unwelcome visitors from your property.

Paint your interior and exterior

Scrapes, stains, scuffs, and blisters are all common on surfaces in need of a fresh coat of paint. Most professional painters recommend investing in house painting once every five to seven years. This will, of course, depend on your lifestyle (pets, kids, and even sunlight, can all shorten the lifespan of your paint).

A well-maintained property is more valuable

Performing the above tips will prolong the life of your home. As a bonus, your property may even enjoy a boost in its value on the property market. It’s a win-win.
